Product Overview

MOTS-C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA region of the mitochondrial genome — a genomic locus not previously associated with protein coding. As a member of the emerging class of mitochondrial-derived peptides, MOTS-C translocates to the nucleus under metabolic stress conditions and is studied as a research tool for examining AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) pathway activation, mitochondrial-nuclear crosstalk, and metabolic substrate utilization regulation in cell-based models.

Research Context

MOTS-C has been studied in the context of AMPK activation via modulation of the AICAR/ZMP pathway, wherein it inhibits the folate cycle and de novo purine synthesis, leading to AICAR accumulation and downstream AMPK phosphorylation — a signaling axis associated with glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, and mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle and adipocyte cell models. Published research has examined MOTS-C-mediated nuclear translocation under conditions of oxidative stress and its interaction with the Nrf2 antioxidant response pathway. It is also researched in the context of insulin sensitivity modulation, cellular stress adaptation, and age-related metabolic decline using in vitro aging and senescence models. MOTS-C represents a research tool for probing inter-organelle communication between mitochondria and the nucleus as a component of the mitochondrial stress response signaling network.
