Do peptides need to be refrigerated?

It is a fair question if a package arrives at room temperature. The answer depends entirely on whether the peptide is still a dry powder or has been mixed into solution.

The short answer

Reconstituted peptides should be refrigerated. Lyophilized (dry) peptides tolerate short periods at room temperature, which is why they ship safely, but for long-term storage they are best kept in a freezer.

Dry peptides are forgiving

In lyophilized form, a peptide has had its water removed, which makes it stable. That is why a package can travel at ambient temperature without a problem. On arrival, though, moving it to cold storage protects it for the long haul.

Reconstituted peptides are not

Once you add water, the peptide is in solution and far more sensitive. A reconstituted peptide should go straight into the refrigerator and stay there between uses.

Reconstitution: bacteriostatic water is added slowly to the lyophilized powder, which dissolves into a stable solution.

Key takeaways

  • Reconstituted peptides: refrigerate them.
  • Lyophilized peptides: fine at room temperature briefly, freezer for long term.
  • Dry form is why peptides ship safely at ambient temperature.
  • Move dry peptides to cold storage after they arrive.

A note on research use

The peptides supplied by Axis Peptide Labs are reference compounds for laboratory and research use only. They are intended for qualified researchers working in academic, institutional, and analytical settings. They are not drugs, foods, cosmetics, or medical products, and they are not intended for human or veterinary consumption. Documented identity and documented purity are what matter most when sourcing a compound, both of which are published on the Axis certificates of analysis page.

Every compound is tested. Every certificate is public.
